What is moisturizer?
What is La Prairie Cellular Cream Platinum Rare? That is a dang good question. Here is what I have found in regards to the most expensive cream per ounce on the market. La Prairie Cellular Cream Platinum Rare, a lavish moisturizer that contains actual platinum as the active ingredient. The only info I could find on how platinum could do anything for this skin was what La Prairie was putting out there. Here are their claims and what they are saying about this might as well be an engagement ring face cream. And let me state that this information took me a long time to find, it was hidden in a magazine article where they were clearly asked exactly how their platinum cream worked. This is what they said, that this cream works by balancing the skins ionic buffer zone. The skin has an ionic buffer zone that works as a protecting agent against free radicals and acts as a moisture barrier. One side of this buffer zone has positively charged electrons and the other side has negatively charged electrons and these can get thrown off balance by environmental stressors thus leaving the skin unprotected and losing the moisture that only a strong buffer zone would be able to hold. The chemist Jacqueline Hill came up with the idea of applying negatively charged particles of platinum to re-establish a good electrolyte balance. So what does that mean to your skin? La Prairie promises that by using this product your skin will be able to absorb nutrients better, guard cellular DNA to prevent damage, enhances the skin’s suppleness, elasticity, and tone, replenishes moisture and promises to give you a look of “soft splendor”. It also says that this cream has what they call the “moisture matrix” which is climate-activated hydration that is said to be able to adjusts to changing humidity levels and temperatures, continuously providing the perfect level of moisture. Wow, that is pretty high tech if you ask me.
La Prairie Cellular Cream Platinum RareIngredient Profile
So now we know the claims, let talk ingredients.
As you know they are giving platinum the lead role for this expensive cream. I pulled some studies, called an acclaimed and published geologist, and did a little research of my own on platinum. In doing this I found a lot of information on platinum for example; platinum is one of the rarest elements in the Earth’s crust and has an average abundance of approximately 0.005 mg/kg, it has six naturally occurring isotopes, 80% of the world production of platinum is out of South Africa. All interesting facts, but none of them have anything to do with the skin and how it could in anyway be beneficial as a skin care product. There was one dermatologist named David Colbert that did say in reference to this cream specifically “Although some precious metals are used in medicine as anti-inflammatories, they require large amounts to be effective.” And continued on saying, “Platinum is a very stable precious metal that can act as an antioxidant, but its use in a skin cream in nano amounts is unlikely to exert any visible effect on skin.”
If platinum is what they are basing the high price on, then I think there is something incredibly wrong here and that the platinum may be nothing more than a gimmick to raise the cost and make this product seem exclusive.
This cream is also full of other moisturizing and antiaging ingredients. Like antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, peptides and other hydrators. This is another thing that makes me wonder if the platinum is nothing more than an attention-grabber, because these ingredients alone can benefit the skin and may be what the believers of this product are actually getting their results from. The thing that is unsettling about that is that you can get these ingredients in high quality products that are 1/10th the cost of this cream.
La Prairie Cellular Cream Platinum Rare Pros
- If you can afford to buy it than you must be doing pretty well for yourself.
- Sold at high end department stores, so it is easily accessible to buy.
- Said to smell amazing.
- Cute container.
La Prairie Cellular Cream Platinum Rare Cons
- The price.
- No real science backing this product.
- The company is very quiet about how this product works, which seems weird. Usually if companies have something they are really proud of they will give more details of how it works and make the ingredient profile more accessible.
Final Thoughts
Wow, I have spent more time trying to wrap my head around this one product then I have any product in my whole skincare career. I have researched, talked to people, read articles, pulled out some of my ingredient text books and even sent an email to the La Prairie Company asking for an ingredient list and have yet to hear back from them. I just couldn’t figure out why this product is so much, what exactly it is really supposed to do for the skin and what bothers me the most, why it seems so hard to learn more about a this expensive facial cream. Wouldn’t you think that with asking so much for a product that the company could be more specific on what it does and why? When I finally felt like I had a bit of a background on this luxury cream I started to write this review but still found myself wondering if this is the “Emperor’s New Clothes” of the facial world.
This platinum cream rings in at $1,000 per fl ounce.
